Following are some useful links to institutes and companies providing information on Icelandic seas and seafood.

The Marine Research Institute (MRI) is a government institute under the auspices of the Ministry of Fisheries. MRI conducts various marine research and provides the Ministry with scientific advice based on its research on marine resources and the environment.

The Icelandic Fisheries Laboratories is an independent state organisation, operating under Act 64/1965 on research on behalf of industries; IFL is under the Ministry of Fisheries. IFL is a research and service organisation for the fisheries sector as well as other food industries.

The Directorate of Fisheries is an Icelandic Government institution under the ultimate responsibility of the Minister of Fisheries. The Directorate is responsible for implementing government policy on fisheries management and handling of seafood products.

The Ministry's offices are at Skulagata 4, 101 Reykjavík overlooking part of the Faxafloi bay. There is a lot of laws and regulations, etc., to be found on the Ministry's page, plus a number of links.

Sustainable fishing based on scientific assessment and recommendations together with responsible fisheries practices and an economically viable seafood industry are the major aims of the Environmental Considerations of the Icelandic Ministry of Fisheries. This Information Centre describes the policy and practices in the Icelandic fisheries relating to these aims and achievements in recent years.
